Here's a question I wanted to address from the "comments" section found below.  This question is from Rachel.

Mark,

With the word that just came down from Stern that Melo would be suspended for 15 games, are you surprised? Do you think that the punishment fits the "crime"? Do you think that he (and/or the others) should have gotten harsher suspensions and/or fines? And, lastly, do you think that the Nuggets and the Knicks should also fine their players that were involved?

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Let me begin by saying that when we first heard about the brawl, we were at the Milwaukee Bucks game in Wisconsin.  We weren't able to see it because there was no TV in the Buck's visitor's locker room, so when we got to our charter that night we tried to download it using a Verizon Wireless internet card.  We only got bits and pieces but the entire team was huddled around KG's plane seat trying to see a little bit of what happened.  I think universally, all of us felt bad about the incident and the players, fans and coaches that were involved.

What happened out there was wrong and I think that every player involved would tell you that.  Carmello got the most of the punishment.   Carmello also came out immediately and issued a public apology.  (see below).

I think the NBA is basically saying, hey, if you are going to throw a punch, there is going to be a big consequence.  After the Detroit incident, there was talk of doing away with courtside seating.  Personally, I think that the courtside seating is one of the biggest differentiators between NBA games and most other major sports leagues.

As far as each team fining their own players, that could get awkward for a few reasons.  First the player is already getting fined a huge sum because they go on "unpaid" leave from all games.  Secondly, their punishment in the media is incalculable.  It would be tough for a GM to come into the locker room and give the player a third tier of punishment.  That's just my opinion though.

Here is Carmello's public apology:

"Last night's altercation with the Knicks escalated further than it should have.  I take full responsibility for my actions in the matter.  In the heat of the moment I let my emotions get the best of me. I apologize to the fans, the Denver Nuggets, the NBA, my mother, and my family for the embarrassment I have caused them. I ask you all for your forgiveness.

I also want to make a personal apology to Mardy Collins and his family.  My actions were inexcusable, and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation.

What makes this all the more painful is that this was one of the most important weeks of my life.  I just realized one of my biggest dreams when we opened the Youth Center in Baltimore that bares (sic) my name.  To see the community excited and hundreds of kids smiling was an incredible feeling. Now the thought of thousands of kids seeing this incident on TV pains me. This is not the example I want to set.

It's my hope that we work to move forward from this event, and never let something like this happen again."

Mark,

Thank you for your response. In my opinion, Carmelo and the rest of the players involved but, especially Carmelo, have been playing basketball long enough to know what is ok and what is not ok. From seeing all of the highlights on ESPN, Carmelo looked about half way to the locker room before he turned around went back and sucker punched some reserve player (not sure who he actually punched) and then took off again. With that being said, I would also like to get your opinion on Isiah Thomas in this whole thing. I realize that he is still being "investigated" for his part in the brawl... did he tell his team to hard foul in the paint or not... do you think that Isiah should be fined and/or suspended. Also, do you think that the reason Karl left his starters out there with less than 2 minutes to go with a 19 point lead was to embarrass Isiah and the Knicks because of how they treated Larry Brown, who is a known close friend of Karl? I know that this is alot but, thanks for your opinions, comments and insight and, again, Happy Holidays.

Hey Mark,
This isn't a related topic but I met you at the ticket counter when you were waiting to pick up some tickets. I just wanted to say I thought you were real down to Earth I really appreciated talking to you. I was there looking for a job and you were helpful. If you need a volunteer for anything locally I would love to give a hand.

Thanks,
Mark D.

The whole thing is a bad situation. During a game, emotions run high and people get frustrated. Then, when there's a hard foul, tempers flare. It's a tough thing to "regulate". And from the NBA's perspective, they have to keep these types of things to a minimum, and if possible, out of the game. It's bad for the image of the league. And at the end of the day, the NBA is a business which is about making money. I think the league has done a pretty good job of getting rid of a lot of the hard fouls and fighting.

Well, the Allen Iverson watch is finally over. I, for one, am glad although it does sting to see him go to the Denver Nuggets, the Timberwolves division rival.

It stings to see him go anywhere but here... I think AI to Minnesota would have really reenergized the pro basketball community in Minnesota. There would have been butts in the seats at Target Center again (or should I say more of them), there would have been excitement which (sorry Mark but as of right now) isn't there, it would have brought National attention back to a small city market and I for one would have loved it and I'm sorry that McHale couldn't put something together to make it happen especially when you look at what Denver gave up to get him.

Mark,

You said the court side seating is the biggest differentiator between the NBA and other sports, do you mean in a positive way or negative way?

Well, Mark, looks like AI ended up in Denver, so none of the Wolves will be packing up just yet (for this trade anyway).

Hey Marc,

Great to see you in the box score again!
I think the big brawl at the Palace was sort of the end of fighting in the NBA. You could tell after that that Stern was going to come down hard on fights from there on.

I don't understand why everyone thinks AI and Melo can play together. AI's never been able to co-exist with a second scorer (Stackhouse comes to mind). Plus, every coach he's ever played for (maybe besides John Thompson) has ended up having problems with him. I think it makes the Nuggets better, but I don't think the move makes them championship contenders. Just look at New Jersey, who have 3 solid wings, but no All-Star big man. And the only team to win a championship in the past 15 years without an All Star big man was Jordan's Bulls, and AI and Melo are great players, but they're no Jordan and Pippen.

Mark,

I hope you are getting some rest. I know these OT Games have got to be tiring. It's great that with the effort you are posting wins. Been good to see you on the court. Lookin forward to an Update soon.
